Bush yam vegetables grow beneath the earth, the floral, bloom-like patterns shown in the painting depict the yam flower in full blossom. The yams are an important food source in traditional aboriginal culture of the Utopia region and are one of the few vegetables that can be found in the arid conditions of central Australia.
