Janie Morgan lives and works in the region of Utopia known as Atnwengerrp, located approximately 300km north east of Alice Springs. Once a substantial cattle station, Utopia was given back to the Aboriginal people as freehold land in the mid 1970s.

Janie was part of the batik projects of the 1970’s. This was an artist led initiative which introduced the Indonesian dyeing technique to the women of Utopia for the purpose of demonstrating the economic viability of the area in preparation for the land claim hearing, and as a means of artistically expressing their legal and moral ownership of the land. She has been painting with acrylic since the 1980s.
